Campfire cooking with the Ranger

Creating a fire safely is only the start, after that you want to be able to use it to do other things, like cooking. There are lots of things that you can cook on a campfire, some of them are even good for you! I usually start with marshmallows, then we can try damper bread (with jam, honey or chocolate), there might be time for chocolate bananas, fruit or vegetable kebabs and of course there are always smores!

As you can tell from the photos I often combine this with a  dark sky activity like stargazing or moon watching or even just the adventure of being out after dark. It is great to combine with den making or shelter building as warmth and shelter are fundamental to being able to survive outdoors. You can use the fire for environmental arts activities too, making some charcoal which you can use to create your own woodland art.
